Outrage as feds slam the brakes on extending NJ Transit light rail line to this urban county

May 04, 2024

A Hudson-Bergen Light rail train leaves Port Imperial, one stop away from the end of the line in North Bergen. Plans to extend it to Bergen County hit a snag when federal officials said it needs more environmental study, despite an updated study that sat dormant in Washington, D.C., since 2018.

The promised extension of NJ Transit’s original light rail line from Hudson County to Bergen County, which had been anticipated for two decades, just encountered a federal roadblock that potentially could add two more years to the process to build it.

Federal Transit Administration officials rescinded a “notice of intent” to act on an Environmental Impact Study, saying updated information is needed, according to a notice in Tuesdays Federal Register.
