As a longtime beauty editor, I never travel without a lighted makeup mirror in my cosmetics case. Hotel bathrooms don’t always have the best lighting, and I’ve learned the hard way that a crystal clear mirror with adequate lighting is necessary for even, smooth makeup application. On a recent trip to Chile for my cousin’s wedding, the Beautifive 6.3-inch Makeup Mirror with Magnification helped me blend my foundation and apply false eyelashes with ease ahead of the big event.
Lighted makeup mirrors vary widely in quality and features, and they aren’t one-size-fits-all solutions, so the Travel + Leisure team conducted thorough testing of 11 lighted makeup mirrors to assess the best ones for various settings and travels. We tested for ease of use, quality, performance, and portability, with Beis’ Light-up Travel Mirror earning the highest marks across the board for its lightweight design and powerful, long-lasting LED light.
Despite its lightweight and slim design, this mirror offers a powerfully bright, evenly lit LED light that can be used for a long time on a single charge.
The cover smudges easily.
T+L writer Rosie Marder found this mirror to be exceptionally travel-friendly due to its lightweight, compact design and protective cover, making it easy to pack and carry without damage. It was simple to use, with a responsive power button and an intuitive charging process via a USB cable. She appreciated the green light that signaled a full battery charge, which lasted throughout the two-week testing process without needing a recharge.
Marder also packed this lighted travel mirror in a carry-on duffel bag on a trip from New York to Florida, and was impressed with its performance each way. The bright light mimicked professional conditions, enhancing makeup application with crisp and accurate reflection. "Every time I use it, I feel like I'm in a professional light and I can see everything so clearly. I also like that I was able to travel with it without any problem, since it's so light and small," Marder said. The adjustable stand stayed firmly in place, and the mirror tilted smoothly for convenience. She found this mirror struck the perfect balance between usable size and compactness, making it an excellent choice for both long and short trips.

This smart, stylish multitasker is great for everyday beauty routines and travel.
It’s bulkier than most travel mirrors and doesn’t include a protective case.
If you prefer to play music while getting ready, listen up: this dual-function product is a lighted makeup mirror and Bluetooth speaker in one, and it genuinely impressed us with its quality and versatility. The 7-inch lighted mirror offers three lighting modes (natural, warm, and cool) with a clear, distortion-free reflection and responsive touch controls, though dimming is slow. Its magnetic base doubles as a surprisingly powerful Bluetooth speaker, lasting up to 11 hours without a recharge. We used the mirror for detailed makeup application and eyebrow grooming, and took it on the go in a tote—although we wouldn’t recommend it for daily commuting due to its bulkiness.
The Details: 7 x 0.6 inches (mirror), 4.3 x 1.6 x 4.3 (base) | 1.6 pounds | 2.5-hour battery life at max brightness (mirror) and 11-hour battery life (speaker)
The various angles and magnifications are ideal for precision work like eyebrow shaping and shaving.
The stand hinges slipped a bit.
A tri-fold mirror with various magnifications lets you view your face from multiple angles and up close for precise grooming and makeup application. We tested this foldable lighted makeup mirror almost daily over a week and found it functional and durable. The mirror arrived fully charged and lasted through a full week of use before needing a quick one-hour recharge. The bright, even LED lighting has three temperature settings ranging from cool to warm, and the touch-sensitive controls were highly responsive. The design includes separate side magnification mirrors at 1x, 3x, and 7x magnifications. The stand has dual hinges that allow for flexible positioning, although we noticed minor slipping at certain angles. It fits easily in a travel makeup bag and feels sturdy enough for regular on-the-go use.
The Details: 6.3 x 5.6 x 0.1 inches | 0.6 pounds | 90-minute battery life
With three light colors, brightness modes, and a detachable 10x magnification mirror, this item has lots of customization options.
The magnifying mirror needs to be detached for it to fold.
If you want a sturdy, easily packable lighted makeup mirror with all the functional features of a full-size setup, this one delivers. It fits snugly in compact toiletry bags and includes a carrying pouch for protection. The mirror features 72 LED lights with cool, natural, and warm color modes and three brightness levels, all controlled by a single responsive touch button. The detachable 10x magnifying mirror offers distortion-free detail, making it ideal for tweezing or precise makeup application. The sturdy plastic build, adjustable hinge that can be affixed at 45 or 90 degrees without slipping, and included velvet pouch enhance its durability for everyday and travel use.
The Details: 5.1 x 7.6 inches | 0.59 pounds | 90-minute battery life
Compact enough to fit in your pant pocket, this mirror is equipped with two magnifications and multiple light settings.
You’ll need to hold it while you use it.
For daily commuting or short trips when luggage real estate is limited, we recommend a compact, lighted makeup mirror such as this one. Lightweight yet sturdy, it easily replaced our everyday handbag mirror, offering a sleek profile and a secure magnetic closure. It’s small enough to fit inside a pant pocket. We were most impressed with the thoughtful design elements, like a notch for easy opening and a ledge for holding it without smudging the glass. The mirror features three LED light settings (cool, warm, and neutral) controlled by a single button, and it includes 1x and 3x magnification sides for precise touch-ups. The battery held a charge throughout the testing period, and the durable exterior showed no signs of wear.
The Details: 3.3 x 2.5 inches | 0.14 pounds | Up to 12-hour battery life
Larger and brighter than a typical sun visor mirror, this lightweight device makes doing your makeup in the car more seamless.
The kickstand for tabletop use is flimsy.
If you’ve ever tried doing your makeup in the car, you’ve probably already figured out that the little mirror on the sun visor leaves much to be desired. This travel mirror is designed to affix to your car’s sun visor, offering a larger field of view than a typical car mirror and a brighter light. It’s about the weight and heft of a Kindle, which is ideal for portability. Though it took T+L associate editor Amelia McBride a bit of trial and error to figure out exactly how to attach it, once on, she appreciated the adjustable warmth settings, powerful brightness, distortion-free mirror, and long-lasting charge life. It was perfect for doing our makeup in the car while parked or riding in the passenger seat. However, McBride wasn't quite as impressed with the kickstand for tabletop use. While the mirror itself is high quality, the plastic backing and kickstand may not endure heavy use. The hinge on the stand offers limited angles and sometimes requires an additional mirror for precision.
The Details: 5.3 x 7.8 x 1.4 inches | 0.5 pounds | 7.5-hour battery life
The sturdy suction cup can be affixed to a wall or mirror and detached for tabletop or on-the-go use.
Though the mirror itself is portable, the suction cup only works in one spot at a time.
A mounted mirror provides stable, hands-free use and consistent positioning, making it easier to apply makeup or groom with precision. This lighted makeup mirror has an adhesive suction cup that easily attaches to tile, marble, or glass surfaces. Since it's a single-application item, we recommend attaching the adhesive suction at home. When you travel, the mirror detaches from the suction cup and becomes a tabletop mirror with a stand. The base is adjustable and stays securely positioned without slipping. We appreciated the powerful brightness that made a noticeable difference even in the daylight. It was simple to toggle between the three warmth settings and variable brightness strengths. Still, it would be even more convenient if the item were waterproof for use in the shower or if the suction cup could also be used on the go.
The Details: 9.84 x 8.07 inches | 1.46 pounds | Up to 13-hour battery life
The train case has plenty of space for a full makeup routine, but you can also detach the LED makeup mirror and carry it separately.
We wish the mirror were a little better protected.
For people who travel with a full makeup routine, a train case can keep your cosmetics organized and protected from spills or damage. When we tested the best train cases for travel, we were particularly fond of this model, complete with a lighted LED mirror. The mirror attaches to the case with Velcro straps and can easily be removed for carrying on its own. It has three light settings (warm, neutral, and cool) and offers variable brightness settings.
Though this case is a splurge, we found it worth it for the high-quality construction and beautiful materials, including a vegan leather exterior and velvet-lined interior. We were able to arrange plenty of travel-size and full-size beauty products without issue.
The Details: 11.9 x 9.6 x 6 inches | 4.14 pounds | 2.5-hour battery life
This foldable tabletop mirror has an adjustable, extendable arm that lets you get multiple angles without slipping.
The velvet pouch is large and doesn’t keep the mirror snugly secure.
On a recent trip to Chile, I was so relieved I had packed this lighted makeup mirror. I was attending a wedding, and doing my makeup in the dimly lit hotel bathroom would have been risky without this extendable tabletop mirror with three light warmth settings and adjustable brightness. I used the 8x magnification side for precision tasks like applying false eyelashes and doing my eyeliner, while the standard magnification side was more useful for blending my foundation and making sure it looked smooth and evenly applied. I appreciated the flexible, extendable arm that let me get all the best angles and stayed put without slipping. Folding it up and stowing it in the included velvet pouch was a breeze, and it took up minimal space in my carry-on suitcase.
The Details: 6.69 x 6.69 x 2 inches (folded), 13.7-inch arm (extended) | 1.1 pounds | 3.3-hour battery life
Ilios LED Compact Mirror: We liked the compactness and dimmable light, but we found the button placement inconvenient as it disrupted the field of view too much.

Rownyeon Travel Light Up Mirror and Train Case: This case was spacious, and the mirror had great features, but we found it heavier than we prefer for travel.
Travel + Leisure
Simplehuman Fold Sensor Mirror: This mirror impressed us with its sturdy build, smooth adjustable tilt, and reliable battery life, but we found the price steep compared to other mirrors we tested with more features.

Our T+L team tested 11 lighted makeup mirrors over a two-week period, including packing them and using them on trips. We began by assessing each mirror’s design, noting any functions or special features. We judged the ease of use based on initial setup and charging, consulting any included instructions. We used the mirrors multiple times in various settings to assess the effectiveness of the lights, magnification, and any other settings. The durability of the materials and their ability to withstand damage were also thoroughly tested. Each lighted makeup mirror was rated on the traits above, and we used copious notes from each tester to assess which mirrors performed best overall and in each category.
Whether you’re planning to use the mirror in a car, hotel room, or airplane, it’s essential to consider its size and weight. Even the most compact travel mirrors can vary significantly in portability, and what fits seamlessly in one traveler’s toiletry bag might be too bulky for another’s. Always check the product’s dimensions and weight specifications to ensure it aligns with your luggage capacity and travel preferences.
Lighted mirrors vary widely in their features, including magnification strength, lighting modes, brightness levels, battery life, and charging methods. Identify which functions matter most to you, whether that’s a high level of magnification for detailed grooming, adjustable light temperatures for accurate makeup application, or extended battery life for travel.
The best magnification for a lighted makeup mirror depends on how you plan to use it. For general makeup application, 1x to 5x magnification is typically sufficient, providing a clear, full-face view without distortion. For detailed tasks like tweezing or eyeliner application, a 10x magnification mirror offers a close-up view for greater accuracy. However, it’s best used with a standard magnification mirror for overall perspective.
Yes, the TSA allows mirrors, including those with lights, to be stowed in carry-on and checked bags. Some airlines may have regulations regarding lithium batteries, so if your lighted makeup mirror uses one, it's a good idea to check with your airline.
To pack a lighted makeup mirror safely, ensure it’s turned off and fully folded or closed to protect the mirror surface. Place it in a padded pouch (or the protective case it came with) with a soft lining to prevent scratches and absorb impact. If you're packing the mirror in a checked bag, position it between soft clothing or in a toiletry bag to cushion it from movement during travel.

For longer trips, she most often carries the Beautifive 6.3-inch Makeup Mirror that she tested for this article. She also combed through testing results from the Travel + Leisure team to recommend the best ones for any type of trip.
